TAKE UP YOUR CROSS, OR YOU CANNOT EVEN BE HIS DISCIPLE

Jesus also said, “Whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27).

Here’s a statement that leaves us no room for maneuver.

There’s nothing halfway about it; either we take up our cross, or it’s absolutely impossible to be His disciple. Would it not be important, then, that we understand completely and profoundly what it means to bear our cross?

Jesus never hides the terms of discipleship, and the terms He lays down are non-negotiable. They’re absolutes—and it’s time for us to let the living Christ once again define the terms of discipleship. The essence of a follower of Jesus Christ is one who has dealt with and continually deals with sin in a radical manner in his or her life.

You might say, “Henry, that sounds awfully absolute.”

It does. But never forget how God looks upon sin. It’s awful to Him. It’s an unspeakable affront. For us to call ourselves disciples of Jesus Christ and dilly-dally with sin in our lives is abhorrent to God! And it must be unthinkable on our part.
